Bambee vs BambooHR: One Is an HR Team, One Is Software, and Neither Does the Hard Part
If you've got Bambee open in one tab and BambooHR in the other, you're about to compare two things that do very different jobs. And, the price most comparison sites show you for one of them is out of date. I'll show you the real number further down, plus one question that tells you in ten seconds which one you need.
The short answer: Bambee is an outsourced HR service. You pay each month and get an HR team and a platform that handle policies, the rules and employee issues with you. BambooHR is HR software. It stores employee data and runs onboarding, time off, Performance Reviews on higher plans and optional payroll, but nobody at BambooHR acts as your HR person. As of October 2026, Bambee's plans start at $199, $799 and $1,499 a month, and BambooHR costs $250 to $650 a month for 25 employees or fewer. Pick Bambee if you need rules and policies handled, and pick BambooHR if you need your people data organized. If your real problem is a manager, a team or a growth mess, you need a person who owns the hard calls.
The names are so close they sound like twins, but they're more like a family doctor and a filing cabinet that happen to share a last name. Both are useful, and you'd never ask the filing cabinet what to do about your chest pain.
Three months after go live, the COO of a 38 person engineering consulting firm sent me a screenshot. It was their shiny new HR system, with a clean org chart, smiling headshots and every employee file uploaded over two long weekends. Right in the middle sat her best project lead's photo. Under it was a message she'd been staring at since breakfast, a formal complaint signed by four of his six direct reports.
The office manager, who'd become "HR" mostly by being the most organized person in the building, had already searched the help center for what to do. It gave her a template.
So, the COO asked me the question every owner asks right about here, "Did we buy the wrong thing?" I'll tell you what I told her further down. You'll also find out what happened to that project lead.
Why Are You Comparing a Family Doctor to a Filing Cabinet?
Owners mix these two up all the time, and it's not your fault. Both show up when you search for HR help for a small business. The difference comes down to who does the work.
With Bambee, you're buying people. Its site promises "Your Own Dedicated HR Manager" and a support team behind that person. Their platform tracks policies, rule gaps and employee issues (Bambee pricing page, read October 24, 2026).
With BambooHR, you're buying software. It's an HRIS, short for Human Resources Information System. That's a fancy name for one place to keep employee data and run your everyday HR tasks (BambooHR pricing page, read October 24, 2026).
The Takeaway: Bambee is an outsourced HR service with a team behind it. BambooHR is HR software you run yourself.
What Bambee Actually Is (and What Its Own Website Can't Agree On)
Bambee calls itself an outsourced HR solution for small businesses. It says it works in all 50 states with companies of up to 500 employees, and its plans now come in three layers (Bambee pricing page). Think of it as an HR platform with an HR Manager behind it. It's built for owners who need HR guidance but don't have enough employees to justify a full time HR hire.
- Observation plans watch your company, flag what needs attention and keep you in the loop.
- Supervision plans work with your managers and people to keep everyday practices on track.
- Management plans take over set practices and issues and do the work to close them out.
Bambee's FAQ says it will coach you through Terminations and help you build HR policies and onboarding documents. It also says it helps with government claims like unemployment and wage complaints (Bambee FAQ, read October 24, 2026). The same FAQ lists its HR team's hours as Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Pacific.
Now for that price I promised you, Bambee's FAQ page still says plans start "at $99 per month." Bambee's listing on Capterra says the same thing (read October 24, 2026). Bambee's own pricing page says plans start at $199, $799 and $1,499 a month. When a company's FAQ and pricing page disagree, trust the pricing page and get the number for your headcount in writing before you sign.
The Takeaway: Bambee sells you HR help in layers, and how much it takes off your plate depends on which layer you pay for.
What BambooHR Actually Is (and Who Ends Up Doing the Setup)
BambooHR is one of the best known HR software tools for small and midsize businesses. It says more than 30,000 companies use it (BambooHR pricing page). One login gives you employee records, hiring tools, onboarding with electronic signatures, time off tracking and reports. The Pro and Elite plans add Performance Reviews. Its job is to automate and streamline the routine work, like time off approvals, paperwork for new hires and, with the benefits add on, Open Enrollment.
Payroll, Benefits Administration and time tracking are add ons you pay for on top of the plan. Every plan also includes "Compliance Intelligence" powered by VirgilHR, which gives you quick answers and templates for legal rule questions.
That's useful stuff, and owners who use it love how easy it is to use. The catch is that software doesn't run itself. Someone at your company has to set it up and keep the data clean. They also have to decide what the policies say and handle the person on the other side of every record.
Nothing says "HR is handled" quite like spending your Saturday uploading 38 offer letters into a system nobody else will log into until Open Enrollment.
The Takeaway: BambooHR organizes your HR. It doesn't decide anything for you, and it doesn't sit in the room.
Bambee vs BambooHR at a Glance

| Bambee | BambooHR | Fractional HR Leader | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Outsourced HR service on a subscription | HR software (an HRIS) | One senior HR leader who works with you part time |
| Who does the work | Bambee's HR team, with you making final calls | You or whoever you make "HR" | The HR leader, alongside you and your managers |
| Starting price, as of October 2026 | $199, $799 or $1,499 a month by plan | $250 to $650 a month for 25 employees or fewer, then $10.25 to $25 per employee | A monthly retainer scoped to your company (see the cost breakdown) |
| Best at | Policies, legal basics and coaching through employee issues | Employee data, onboarding, time off, reviews and payroll in one place | Manager problems, growth, pay structure, culture and the hard calls |
| Payroll | Not on its current plan pages | Optional add on | Works with whatever payroll you use |
| Where it falls short | Layers and pricing take homework, and billing is the most common complaint in recent Trustpilot reviews | Setup and upkeep land on you | It's one person, so the fit has to be right |
The circle that matters most isn't in either product. When the call is "should this manager still be managing," you want someone who knows your company and your people as well as your policies.
How Much Do Bambee and BambooHR Cost in 2026? The Math for a 22 Person Company
These are the published numbers as of October 24, 2026, with no discounts or add ons, from Bambee's pricing page and BambooHR's pricing page. Bambee lists starting prices by plan, so your number may be higher for your headcount. BambooHR charges a flat monthly rate if you have 25 employees or fewer. Above that, it charges per employee, starting at $10.25 for Core, $17.50 for Pro and $25 for Elite, with volume discounts.

| Plan | Monthly, as published | Per year for a 22 person company |
|---|---|---|
| Bambee Observation | from $199 | from $2,388 |
| Bambee Supervision | from $799 | from $9,588 |
| Bambee Management | from $1,499 | from $17,988 |
| BambooHR Core | $250 flat | $3,000 |
| BambooHR Pro | $425 flat | $5,100 |
| BambooHR Elite | $650 flat | $7,800 |
Run it again at 60 employees and BambooHR Core becomes $615 a month before volume discounts, or $7,380 a year. That's before payroll or benefits. Through December 31, 2026, BambooHR is waiving payroll subscription fees for qualifying new buyers on a 12 month agreement. Setup and some other fees still apply (BambooHR pricing page, read October 24, 2026).
So, the cheapest line on that table isn't automatically the cheapest choice. Say someone inside your company spends five hours a week running BambooHR. That time is part of the price, and so is whatever doesn't get done while they're doing it.
The Takeaway: BambooHR is usually the smaller monthly number, and Bambee charges more as it takes on more of the work. Price each plan at the headcount you'll have next year, because that's the bill you'll actually pay.
What Customers Say After the Sales Call Ends
As of October 24, 2026, on Trustpilot, Bambee has 2.7 out of 5 from 1,616 reviews and BambooHR has 3.3 from 154 reviews. On Capterra, Bambee has 4.5 from 37 reviews and BambooHR has 4.6 from 3,653 reviews.
The scores swing a lot by site, so the patterns in what people say tell you more than the stars do.
If you're already using BambooHR, you might like how easy it is to use. But, if payroll and time tracking run somewhere else, it can turn into a pricey file drawer. Or, maybe you were sold one thing and then left to figure it out on your own. You watched training videos when what you needed was someone to show you.
If you're already with Bambee, you might be thinking the advice on your first issue was good, but then surprise charges started showing up. Or, you can't get a real human when it matters, or every call starts with you explaining who your company is.
And, with both, a lot of owners feel the same thing, they paid to take HR off their plate and they're still the one holding it.
The Takeaway: BambooHR's biggest complaints are about setup and support, and Bambee's are about billing and reaching a person. Ask about both before you sign.
The Ten Second Test for Which One You Need
The question I promised you is simple, what's the next hard thing coming at your company, a process, a rule or a person?
- A process problem looks like time off tracked in a spreadsheet, onboarding paperwork in seven inboxes and nobody sure where the signed offer letters are. BambooHR solves that well.
- A rule problem looks like no Employee Handbook, policies you copied from a friend's company and a Termination you want done by the book. Bambee is built for that.
- A person problem looks like a manager who's losing his team or founders who can't agree on pay. It can also be a culture that's slipping as you grow past 30 or 40 people. Neither one is built for that.
If your answer was the third one, keep reading, because that's where most of the expensive mistakes live.
What Neither One Does, and How the Screenshot Story Ended
Buying HR software to fix a manager problem is like buying a nicer calendar to fix a marriage. You'll be very organized while it falls apart.

Back to that COO and her screenshot, I told her the software was fine and doing exactly its job, which was holding files. The complaint needed a person who would read it, talk to the people involved and help her make a call she could stand behind.
So, we kept the software and sat down with the project lead. It turned out he'd been promoted for being the best engineer in the building. Then he was handed six people with no playbook, no training and no idea what a manager at that firm was supposed to do. He got coaching, clear expectations in writing and a real 1:1 rhythm with his team. Two of the four people who complained still work for him today. And, the office manager went back to being the office manager, which she'll tell you was the best part.
That's the work a Fractional HR Leader does. You get one senior person who learns how your company runs, coaches your managers, builds what's missing and is there when the hard call comes. In my book Don't Suck at Culture, I put it this way, "Culture isn't what you say. It's what you permit." Software can store what you say, but only a leader can change what you permit.
If you want the full side by side on that choice, read Fractional HR vs Bambee and Fractional HR vs PEO vs HR Consultant.
What the Wrong Pick Costs You
The wrong pick usually costs you slowly, a little every week, until one bad day costs you a lot.
You pay for software and you're still the HR department, answering every question at 9 pm. You pay for a service and find out your plan doesn't cover the thing you needed this week. Or, worse, the hard call gets made by whoever's closest, the way it almost happened at that engineering firm. Then you lose the manager, the four people who complained and the two clients they were carrying.
That's the real number to compare. A plan you can cancel costs you a few hundred dollars a month. A bad Termination, a team walking out or an employee threatening to sue costs you far more.
The Takeaway: Compare what each option costs if it fails you on your worst day, because the monthly price only tells you what a normal Tuesday costs.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign
1. Who exactly will I talk to when something goes wrong, and will it be the same person six months from now?
2. What does the price become when we add 10 or 20 people?
3. Is hands on setup help included, or is it videos and a help center?
4. When a manager problem or a Termination comes up, who's in the room helping me decide?
5. How fast do you answer, and what happens when something blows up after hours?
6. What's in writing about renewals and canceling, and can I download every file in one go if I leave?
So, Bambee or BambooHR?
Pick BambooHR if your HR pain is data and paperwork and you have someone inside who'll own the system. Pick Bambee if you need policies, legal basics and coaching on employee issues for a smaller team. Maybe you're growing, your managers are learning on the fly and the hard calls keep landing on your desk. If that's you, neither one replaces a person who owns those calls with you.
Plenty of growing companies keep their HR software and add a Fractional HR Leader on top, so the system holds the files and someone senior handles the people. If you're running 60 people with no HR department or you want to see what the first 90 days look like, start there.

Common Questions
Is Bambee the same as BambooHR?
No. Bambee is an outsourced HR service that gives you an HR team and a platform on a monthly subscription. BambooHR is HR software that stores employee data and runs onboarding, time off, Performance Reviews on higher plans and optional payroll. They're separate companies.
How much does Bambee cost in 2026?
As of October 24, 2026, Bambee's pricing page lists Observation plans from $199 a month, Supervision plans from $799 a month and Management plans from $1,499 a month. Some older pages, including Bambee's own FAQ, still show $99, so confirm the price for your headcount before you sign.
How much does BambooHR cost in 2026?
As of October 24, 2026, BambooHR charges a flat $250, $425 or $650 a month for Core, Pro or Elite if you have 25 employees or fewer. Above 25 employees it charges per employee per month, starting at $10.25, $17.50 or $25, with volume discounts. Payroll, Benefits Administration and time tracking cost extra, though payroll subscription fees are waived through December 31, 2026 for qualifying new buyers on a 12 month agreement.
Does BambooHR give you an HR person?
No. BambooHR is software with customer support, legal rule answers and templates. It doesn't assign someone to handle your employee issues or make HR decisions with you.
Is Bambee a PEO?
Bambee describes itself as an outsourced HR service. Its pricing and FAQ pages don't describe becoming the employer of record for your payroll taxes and benefits, which is what a PEO does.
Does BambooHR do payroll?
Yes, as an add on for US employees. BambooHR also lists more than 150 partner apps that connect to it, so some companies keep their current payroll provider and connect it instead.
Which is better for a company with 12 to 50 employees?
It depends on your biggest gap. If you need your employee data and onboarding organized, BambooHR fits. If you need policies and legal basics handled, Bambee fits. If your gap is managers, growth or hard employee decisions, a Fractional HR Leader fits better than either one.
Can I use HR software and a Fractional HR Leader together?
Yes, and it's a common setup. The software holds your records and runs the everyday work, and the Fractional HR Leader builds the policies, coaches your managers and owns the hard calls with you.
